SENSITIVITY
The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius 1654
My painting teacher recently referred me to this painting after seeing some images of my most recent work where I have a similar proposal of light and shadow. After reading his suggestion I looked up the painting straight away to be stunned by it’s sensitivity, beauty and technique. Apparently Fabritius was one of Rembrandt’s most gifted pupils and you can see why; His treatment of the shadow behind the finch is perfect and breathtaking. I am so in awe of this simple and affecting painting. All I can say is, I wish I had painted it.
